MEMORY LANE: Chronological photo-trace of Hasay's career at Golden West, courtesy of Don Gosney (2005, 2007, 2008) and Kirby Lee (2006).
| By Rich Gonzalez Editor, DyeStatCal/ESPN RISE (June, 2009) -- Has it really been five years? It was the start of summer of 2005 and the precocious age-group phenom known as Jordan Hasay was getting her baptism into the high school running scene. Competing as a recently graduated 8th-grader, Hasay took on the likes of All-American talents Marie Lawrence, Erin Bedell and Annie St. Geme as part of a 16-person mile field in the 46th annual Golden West Invitational. Hasay, a half-pint sized bundle of energy with waist-length hair locked into a ponytail and streaming behind her in the Folsom air, showed us plenty of spunk and promise while also revealing wholly unrefined racing skills. The early leader, she set an agrressive pace that her older and more experienced counterparts fed off of, eventually stringing her in as the aforementioned trio gave her a 'wake-up call' welcome in the high school ranks. Ever since, she has not only turned the tables while competing at Mission College Prep in San Luis Obispo... she has erased all weaknesses, added new racing weapons, honed her fitness, stoked her competitive fires, and mastered the competition. In short, Jordan Hasay has totally revamped the competitive landscape of female high school distance running, matching the rock-star levels of popularity first enjoyed by her prep male equivalent (Alan Webb) a few years prior. Now, she returns to the scene of the crime -- where she first stole our hearts before vandalizing the record books and breaking the speed limits of high school distance running. In between, the results have been staggering: three Juniors Nationals titles in track and field and two more in cross-country; two FootLocker cross-country titles; the first to win four California state 3200m titles; three Arcadia Invitational 3200m titles; an Olympic Trials finalist at 1500 meters; the national high school record (4:14.50) at 1500 meters. Now freshly graduated from high school, Hasay closes out her prep career with her last preps-only competition this weekend, the 50th Annual Golden West Invitational, where it all began. She'll joust in the mile, where she is the heavy favorite after speedy clockings at both the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford in late April and the adidas Track Classic in Carson in mid-May. But she will be challenged; also in the field is San Diegan Sammy Silva (Academy of Our Lady of Peace), the high school season's best full four-lapper in California this year with high-profile wins at both the Arcadia Invitational and the state meet, the former coming with an impressive finising kick and the latter unfolding with a go-out-hard-and-tough-it-out approach. Hasay loves national records and the all-time standard here is 4:35.24 set by Polly Plumer 27 years ago, but Hasay (#10 all-time at a converted 4:40.77 -- she sparingly has run the 1600 or mile at high-level competitions) will very unlikely threaten the record here without elite-level talent to do the work in the early going. But never count her out a she has both the talent and the fitness (see Payton Jordan and adidas Track Classic) to be in the vicinity if the stars aligned properly. At the very least, it will be a memorable treat for fans who watched the first chapter of a high school career unfold on this very same Folsom High track to watch it conclude, perhaps with a fifth GWI title. The 50th annual Golden West Invitational -- for a staggering half a century a showcase of premier prep talent -- has withstood the test of time that has seen major changes in the sport, including the emergence of countless in-season and postseason competitions and the challenge of funding/scheduling of training cycles to withstand such. Entry numbers and the national reach from the GWI has been hampered somewhat in recent years, but the venerable meet continue to attract much more than its share of elite talents. Aside from Hasay-Silva in the girls mile, here's some other gems to watch this weekend: BOYS/GIRLS THROWS: Colorado's Mason Finley (Buena Vista HS) arrives in the Golden State a few months early as he is set to attend UCLA beginning in the fall mfor college. Bruins throws coach Art Venagas has hit the recruiting jackpot with Finley, a quiet 6-foot-8, 340 bohemoth who smashed the national recod in the discus with a 236-06 fling at the High Altitude Challenge in late April. Finley will seek to duplicate the GWI title won by his father (Jared) way back in 1977, will aim to best Niklas Arrhenius' all-time prep best (234-03) at sea level) and set out to vanquish Kamy Keshmiri's meet record of 225-02 set at the 1987 meet. While the meet boasts a few throwers approaching 190 feet in the discus and beyond the 60-foot plateau in the shot, none are at the level of the amazing Finley, whose towering put of 71-03 bests the field by over 10 feet! On the girls side, there's no Anna Jelmini here to make it a complete pair of national recordholders, but Stockdale of California sophomore Alex Collatz IS a national record setter too! Collatz unleashed a stellar 177-00 effort at the California state meet last week to establish a 10th-grade national discus record and will be picked to win the event this weekend. GIRLS/BOYS POLE VAULT: All the assembled talent here hails from the West Coast but that's not so bad since it's where the hotbed exists. Two of the nation's top four non-seniors will go at it as California state champion and junior Kortney Ross of Westview (San Diego area) tangles with sophomore MacKenzi Landry of nearby Del Oro High, with both already above the 13-foot level this spring. Ross' 13-04 ranks second nationally in 2009 among high schoolers. On the boys side, California state champ Michael Woepse of Mater Dei (16-09) is America's top non-senior, with the Orange County star seeking to hold off the challenge of veteran aerialist Mick Viken of Illinois in a percursor to the Junior Nationals meet in Eugene, OR, in two weeks. BOYS SPRINTS/HURDLES: Mississippi's Tavaris Tate (Starkville HS) will seek to prove once and for all that he's the best long sprinter in the land with efforts in both the 400 meters and the 200. In the one-lap dash, his nation-leading 45.48 at last week's Great Southwest meet was a barnburner that occurred at altitude, where less presence of wind (and thus wind resistance, which slows times) was evident. However, Tate -- who won at Golden West in 2007 -- is more than half a second faster than the nation's bext sea level time (46.02). Ohio state champion William "Blake" Heriot has toured the oval in 47.16 and projects to be Tate's chief nemesis here. The deuce pits the same two combatants (Tate holds a 20.89-21.25 edge over Heriot in the half-lap sprint), who are joined by Northern Californian George Atkinson (Granada HS, Livermore) with a legal best of 21.31. The boys 100 could be a scorcher up front as Georgia's Kenneth Gilstrap (10.31 legal) tops the field. The Floridian holds a couple of tenths of a second advantage over the rest. A major recruiting coup occured in the high hurdles, where the met attracted Nike Indoor Nationals champion Wayne Davis III to fly in from North Carolina. The explosive and efficient Davis captured the indoor crown while saddled with a severe ankle sprain, a condition which also afflicted much of his outdoor competition calendar. GIRLS SPRINTS/HURDLES: is there any chance we can get Miami Southridge's Ebony Eutsey to drop down to the 200m? The nation's best at the full lap (52.42), Eutsey is the heavy pick in the longest sprint, but would make an ultra-attractive addition to the half-lap dash, where California sensations Ashton Purvis and Jessica Davis will be locking up. Purvis ripped a legal 23.46 at the California state meet last weekend while Davis (23.68) holds a slight edge over Eutsey (23.78) in legal clockings this spring. Purvis (fast starts and smooth, excellent acceleration) and Davis (not so smooth out of the blocks, but major power once she's in full throttle) will also face off in the 100. St. Mary's of Berkley super frosh Trinity Wilson, who clipped hurdles in failing to advance from her Area Finals meet in California postseason, will return to her specialty event here, squared against another Northern California talent in Hercules' Chalese Davis. Wilson did advance to the state meet in the 100, where a few weeks of highest-level speed work there should no doubt carry over into nice results in the short hurdles race. GIRLS JUMPS: We've been robbed! We were hoping for a rematch of the great showdown between Alitta Boyd and Ciarra Brewer (where Brewer prevailed) at the California state meet, but Brewer has apparently elected not to return to the site of her age-group national record TJ leap. Boyd, a national class talent in both horizontal jumps and defending champ here in the triple jump, has spanned a wind-aided 42-10.50 lifetime best in the triple and approached the 20-foot barrier in the long. BOYS DISTANCES: This is sizing up to be a great sophomore class nationally and we'll see three of the best here, with Central Californian Justin Vilhauer of Visalia Redwood, the top time entrant, Southern Californian Ammar Moussa (Arcadia HS) and Nevada's Wade Meddles (Sierra Lutheran) arriving as three of the West Coast's budding multi-lap stars, leading the boys 3200m field here. The mile could be a back-and-forth battle between Wyoming's Dominick Robinson (Campbell County HS), Northern California's Philip MacQuitty (Palo Alto HS), Arizona talent Steve Magnuson of Ironwood Ridge and excellent sophomore Bryan Jordan of Nevada's Galena High.
