(STATEWIDE) -- It might be a tad premature to label the 2008 girls' cross-country season as "The Year
of the Transfer", but it is interesting to note that five of the better teams in the Southland -- including two of
the finer squads in the nation -- are beneficiaries of school-to-school movement during the offseason. Indeed
it is a case of 'the rich get richer' as five teams pegged within our California Top 20 are being bolstered by
the residence changes.
Most notable among the allegiance movements is Sierra Vega's move from Chapparal of the Inland Empire
over to Foothill of Santa Ana in Orange County. Vega just missed receiving Division I all-state accolades a year
ago after finishing 11th (top 10 earn the distinction) and will join a group that should make a serious push for
the Division III state title. That's right, Foothill moves down to Division III from Division II this fall.
Another key switch whose impact remains to be seen is Kristin Parry's inter-sectional relocation from
Fallbrook of the San Diego Section to Dana Hills of the Southern Section. A change in the family's living situa-
tion accounts for the move. Parry was part of a bumper crop freshmen crew from the San Diego area last year,
placing 13th in Division I to earn the final individual berth to state. She endured a rough day at the state meet,
but should benefit by having PLENTY of girls to run with in Dana Point. The Dolphins are among the deeper lineups
in the nation this year, but they'll welcome Parry with open fins -- er, arms!
An additional transfer of note sees Cathryn Saylor of Buchanan in the Central Section making the move down
to South Orange County in the Southern Section, where she'll join the squad at Trabuco Hills. Saylor was the #4
scorer (19:43) for the Bears at the state meet, where the team placed 13th with a lineup that featured no seniors.
Much like Dana Hills, Trabuco Hills is stockpiled with talent, returning five girls that placed ahead of Saylor in the
Division I state meet race a year ago. According to Dana Hills coach Rex Hall, the Saylor family had also inquired
about transferring to Dana Hills.
The fourth transfer to highlight (all in Orange County.. hmmm) is an inter-sectional relocationm that sees
Folsom's Rachel Rucireta moving to the Southland from the Sac-Joaquin Section. Rucireta, the #3 finisher on
Folsom's state finalist Division I team of a year ago, will suit up for Esperanza of Anaheim, where her state
meet time slots her as this year's #3 among the returning Aztecs. Folsom had been a preseason Top 31 team before Rucireta's departure.
The final transfer with significant implications occurs in the Central Section as sophomore Alyssa Mejia has
relocated from Reedley to Clovis. Mejia placed second in the Section Championships Division II racewith a time of
20:04 at Woodward Park. She joins a Clovis lineup that has All-American candidate Meghan Marvin leading every
athlete returning from a group placing 15th in State Division I, within five points of two other teams.
It might be tough to match the ultra mind-boggling depth that California enjoyed a year ago, a magical season
topped by Division I state champion Saugus' eventual second-place finish at Nike Team Nationals. Look for the
Golden State to likely have three teams ranked nationally when Marc Bloom's Preseason Top 25 poll comes
out late this month.
Keep in mind that girls' preseason team rankings are infinitely trickier to forecast thanks to the common
arrival of 'impact' freshman, a case rarely seen on the boys' side at the varsity level, as well as the physical
maturation the female athlete often experiences at this level of their running careers, moreso than on the boys'
side at this age.
But soon enough, the young ladies will be mixing it up on the course in seeking to top last year's theatrics!

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 3rd in State Division 3. How Much Returns in 2008: Five of the top six at the state meet return!
Synopsis For The New Season: The North Coast Section's top program
is stacked entering the 2008 campaign! Led by a pair of harriers near
19-flat at Woodward and three others under 20 minutes, the crew has
solid presence up front and exceptional depth for a Division III school.
Grace Orders, the team's top returnee from the state meet, continued
her fine frosh season with 5:109/11:03 clockings for 1600/3200 meters
in track. Olivia Warren was a strong talent on the oval as well (sub-2:20
for 800m) and could be a key addition to the varsity squad this year.
Campolindo peaked well to earn a spot on the podium in Fresno,
trailing only a pair of Southern Section teams and well ahead of
NCS rival Maria Carrillo. Look for the program to be at its best in
November!

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 11th in CIF-SS Division I Finals How Much Returns in 2008: Everyone returns from squad that contended for state berth.
Synopsis For The New Season: Coach Roger Evans has reason for excitement as
the new season quickly approaches and it's not just because he's blessed with one of
the top runners in the Western United States! Liberty Miller (17:33 at Mt. SAC) indeed
is among the best around, but SV has a fine supporting cast as junior Chanelle Nicholas
leads five others who have run in the 19s at Mt. SAC! The school is clearly pegged as
a state meet qualifer come November, with the crew really closing in on the top
programs. The program will have plenty of competition throughout the year, including
neighborhood rival Royal and local foes such as Thousand Oaks. Their upside also
is very promising as only 18 seconds separated their 3-through-6 returnees on the
Mt. SAC course. With that type of competitive proximity on race day, Evans very likely
has the practice situation where several talented girls can push eahc other to improve.

Synopsis For The New Season: Hard to believe the huge
gap between returnee times from last year's state meet for
this powerhouse of recent years, but just look at the results
during track season... the top five oval returnees averaged
5:12 for 1600 meters! Nicole Hood came back from off-season
injury to run 5:03 and change for four laps, with much-improved
Heather Cerney dipped below 4:58! Kellie Houser also
popped a fine time in track at 3200m (11:01), tagging this
group as one that could end up crashing into our statewide
Top 10 before too long!

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 14th in CIF-SS Division 1 Finals How Much Returns in 2008: Several key graduations from a very deep team.
Synopsis For The New Season: There were definitely a few hiccups
along the way last year for an arsenal expecting to have an outside shot
at the state meet. Instead, a few bad breaks played out, with three top
performers having since graduated. The group needs to address depth
issues this fall but has an excellent starting point with Kelly Upson leading
four runners at sub-19:20 at Mt. SAC! Two others have since gone
sub-2:22 for 800 meters in track, making the Highlanders a crew that should
be on the move. With area foe Simi Valley also being very strong in 2008,
the intensity and motivation should not be lacking!

Synopsis For The New Season: What was sizing up as a potential
dream year for the Huskies turned into a nightmare last November.
South Hills saw multiple key runners perform at least 30 seconds
off their Mt. SAC PRs and the untimely meltdown occurred at the
worst possible time: CIF -SS Finals. The end result was South Hills
missed the state meet by a single point. Ouch. Jessica Nunez is
the top girl in the San Gabriel Valley and has the Mt. SAC course a
short four-minute drive from her school parking lot, so no one will
know those hills better than her come championship time.

How Much Returns in 2008: Two of top three at state graduated, but all others back!
Synopsis For The New Season: Pretty much as we were anticipating, Canyon
was among the best-kept secrets in Division II a year ago. Unfortunately, they
didn't make quite the bang we expected on championship weekend. With three
of its top six runners averaging more than a minute slower on the Woodward Park
course than at Mt. SAC, the crew clearly had an off day in Fresno. The good news
is a few key performers are back and a few new names appeared in track.
With any good fortune, the team has a chance at a top-five finish in state!

Synopsis For The New Season: It's a "2-3 split". Two excellent frontrunners, then
a noticeable gap to its next three scorers. That combination will be strong enough
to make RB a tough cookie for most of the year, but will the formula crumble in
the face of deep fields come championship time? This year, the odds figure to be
more in Rancho Bernardo's favor. A rumored key arrival plus three returning
scorers making the freshmen-to-sophomore transition means pure upside for
the group. Molly Grabill, one of those young guns, ranked among the best
frosh in the nation during track season (10:27.97 for 3200 meters) and will
take cracks at several San Diego Section course records this fall!

Synopsis For The New Season: Carlmont is the real big Division 2
heavy hitter in the Central Coast Section, but look for Gunn to try
closing in on regional rival Mountain View for divisional honors
and return trips to Fresno. An early report from the summer had Gunn
enjoying excellent training progress for a group that averaged
under 19 minutes on the state meet course for its top three runners,
who are part of a group that welcomes everyone back! Senior Allegra
Mayer and sophomore Jackie Evans leads the charge for Coach Ernie Lee's crew!

How Much Returns in 2008: The top three and four scorers among a total of six
returnees!
Synopsis For The New Season: Yes, you definitely would need to do some work
and dig around in order to find Tesoro, but once you do that... what a talent find
they are! Senior-to-be Megan Meyer leads a deep crew of returnees with sub-20:00
credentials at Mt. SAC, where the crew just missed advancing to the Section Finals
a year ago. This time out should prove different, with the crew definitely worthy of
making the final and also in position to challenge for one of the division's seven
state meet berths. Meyer ranks among the premier talents in the Orange County
region and she is supported by a quartet of teammates roughly within a minute of
her front-running pace. Kathryn Vidmar (hey, doesn't former Olympic medalist
Peter Vidmar reside in the Tesoso attendance area? hmmm) ran a fine race at
the Mt. SAC Invitational a year ago and sophomores-to-be Jacqueline Jacobs
and Nicci Corbin ranks as a very dangerous underclass duo for the future!

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 5th in State Division I How Much Returns in 2008: Two all-state performers have graduated but all others return!
Synopsis For The New Season: The HUGE talents have left the nest of Coach Mark Evans' solid co-ed program, but the hopes are that veteran Michelle Callister will continue her improvements and be a solid example for teammates, helping the crew battle rising Arcadia for the Pacific League crown, getting back to the sectino finals, and perhaps -- if all falls into place -- contending for a return trip to state! The Falcons have Callister and Carlotta Pham as a very respectable 1-2 punch, with keys being the continued progress of Megan Doeding and Anneke Kakebeen as well as the emergence of a fifth scorer. A mid-summer report from Coach Evans was quite optimistic, stating the program will hope to 'surprise' a few rivals once the end of the season roll around! 26. Great Oak (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 4A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 11th in CIF-SS Division I Finals How Much Returns in 2008: Top two have graduated, but all others return from a deep program with large numbers.
Synopsis For The New Season: Daaaaaaaangerous! The program is very competitive, very deep, very proud and very talented! Coach Doug Soles' arsenal had a bit of trouble escaping the perils of an endless Division I talent pool come championship time a year ago, but the crew is deeper than ever after a sensational track season of distance running. Heather Wilson had to play third fiddle to some talented teammates a year ago, but she moves to the forefront while Alex Blake, Katie Johnson and Samantha Morabe are sturdy backups. The Wolfpack also has a solid 9th-grade crop and had Kaitlyn Malloy roll into prom- inence with some great times on the oval during track. Although not in our preseason Top 25, this lineup has certain and tremendous upside unlike that of other programs listed in the 20s. Keep an eye on Great Oak.... a program with strong tradition and the best yet to come!
