2008 California Cross-Country Previews
Boys Team-By-Team Capsules

By Rich Gonzalez - DyeStatCal Editor
(STATEWIDE) --
Welcome to the 2008 California cross-country scene! With the season start now just six weeks
away, we'll bringing you a cavalcade of previews by various categories, all packaged to provide you a quick
and quality look at what's to come in the Fall of 2008!
To get you started here's the CIF-State 31 Top Boys Teams for 2008. Why 31 teams, you ask?
Well, the state is very deep at its starting point this year so we wanted that to coincide with as many teams as
possible. Perhaps it just happens to be coincidence, but 31 is also the number of teams that compete at the
NCAA NationalChampionships each year and this year also happens to be when the Nike Team Nationals
event is being renamed to the Nike Cross Nationals as an individual championship is also added to its schedule
and will be run NCAA Championships-style, with teams and individuals in the same race.
But more on that later. For now, let's first get on with the Boys Team Previews. This information is based on what
we have from last year, with updated being made throughout the rest of this summer. Final preseason rankings will
be posted in the third week of August.
As you will notice, we've added a new category to our rankings called Power Ratings. This easy-to-decipher
reference classifies teams within a performance tier as compared to other teams. In order to make the Top 31,
you had to fall within the top four tiers. How does it work? Simple. Teams in the first tier are teams that rate as the
very elite in the state, with the next best group at Tier #2 and so on. The size of each tier is fluid; it can be as small
as just one team in the tier to as many as a few hundred. If two teams are grouped in the same tier, it means that
those teams are close enough in talent and performance to be considered almost equal. So if the team ranked #14
is a Tier 2 team, for example, and the team ranked #23 is also a Tier 2 team, it would indicate that teams #14
through #23 are actually very comparable statistically.
It would not be an upset if a team in any tier beats another team within their tier; in fact, it's expected). When a
team defeats a team one tier higher, that's a mild upset but please consider that teams/coaches focus on different
meets, are on varying training cycles, etc.). If a team were to defeat a squad rated two tiers higher, THAT would be
considered an upset. We don't expect that to happen that much. The new stat provides an easier and better compar-
isons between teams than just the standard numerical rankings, which gives no insight as to how close two teams
may be to each other.
If you see any incorrect information below, the very best way to get it fixed is to bring it to my attention by
emailing me at Roadrunner4rich@aol.com . Thanks! Now let's get to our first preview!

1. Dana Hills, Dana Point (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 1
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Champions in State Division 1
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns four from the varsity, supported by the state's best junior varsity team of 2007!

Synopsis For The New Season: The EPI Sports database tells us that if you're a returning 4:34.47 1600-meter runner, that time places
you as the #1 runner at your school in more than 80% of the schools in the state. In all but two schools, you'd rank among your school's
"scoring five" if that order were carried over to a cross-country lineup. But at Dana Hills, home of the deepest squad around? You'd be
the top runner on the jay-vee team. Yikes! As deep as the Dolphins were last year, the group is equipped to swim even deeper into the
talent pool in 2008! Coach Tim Butler's arsenal has twins Tyler and Ryan Valdes (seniors already? - time flies!) spearheading a dynamic
attack that reveals three runners at sub-16:00 (Zak Phillips being the third) on the state meet course, a fourth (Anthony LaCambra, the
aforementioned 4:34.47 four-lapper) just above that threshold, and then a wave of reinforcements, including Josh Dean (4:27.68/9:45.4),
Blake Ahrold (9:47.62/4:31.53), Jesus Molina (4:31.31/9:52.90), Richard Campuzano (4:36.86/10:00.74 as a frosh) and several more!
Butler and Co. have "enjoyed" this dilemma before, often requesting a "second varsity" to compete at invitationals, with that crew always
able to handle its own! So how good are the Dolhpins? Despite a significant off-day at last year's Nike Team Nationals, the crew this year
could be pegged as among the top three teams in the nation. So how deep are the Dolphins? Well, if we put their 8 through 12 runners
(the JV scoring five) into the analysis mix, the Dana Hills "B" team would rank among the top 40 varsity teams in the entire state! Cuh-razy!

2. Buchanan (Central Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 1
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Fifth in State Division 1
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns six from the varsity, including all five scorers!

Synopsis For The New Season: This is the year, boys. Many seasons in the making, the Bears are reaching the end of the high school road and
still searching for that elusive state title, with "You Know Who" starting up on top in 2008. Can Buchanan knock off the big dogs? The group finished
36 points out of second place at state last year, but those points translated into a few mere seconds in separating the top teams. The great news is
that everyone is back for the ultra-rich Central Section power, which has spawned such great collegians and post-collegians as Kyle Alcorn,
Fernando Cabada and Casey Burchill. Co-leaders Jonathan Sanchez (9:10.38 at state) and Danny Vartanian (9:24.10) are coming off excellent
track campaigns, with three others at sub-16:20 at Woodward Park also in the loop. How about a dozen returnees at sub-five for 1600 meters? Or
seven individuals at sub-10:15 for 3200? Need more? Well, how about Clay "C.J." Albertson? He's the incoming freshman you'll start hearing
about who went 4:21.9/9:30.9 for 1500/3k in track as an eighth grader? oooooh yea. This group is looking good and they are pretty hungry too!
Maybe, just maybe, that state title comes in 2008! The tools are surely there.

3. Barstow (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 1
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Won State Division 3 championship by more than 50 points!
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns five from the varsity after having graduated only its top runner.

Synopsis For The New Season: If you're looking at the track stats for Barstow's returnees and wondering how on Earth they are ranked #3,
let us be the first to welcome you into the sport of cross-country. Because it's obvious you know nothing about Barstow's distance running
tradition. The Aztecs have seemingly no pedigree on the oval (indeed, having two athletes advancing to Masters in the 3200 last season
was a rare exception), but boast a tradition richer than anyone this millenium when it comes to attacking Woodward Park. Coach Jim Duarte's
army is the three-time defending state Division III champion (longest active streak) and has won an unmatched five state titles since 2001.
Although top runner Anthony Solis has graduated (now at Chico State), Barstow returns all others, including all-staters Isaac Chavez and
Andrew Romano. Three others at 16:30 or faster on the state meet course given this tradition-rich unit the tools to once again be primed
for a state meet title. Can they finally get over the hump and make it to Nike Cross Nationals? Any of the top teams in the state are loaded,
with only two automatic berths available. That means teams will need at-alrge points to improve their chances. For Barstow, a Division III
school not likely to face the Division I and Division II powers during the year, this is expecially crucial. The Aztecs might want to consider
"moving up" in enrollment class during major invitationals in hopes of securing at-large points. Otherwise, it's all eggs in one delicate
basket at state. In either case, look for Barstow to be at its best in November, but might take a stab at the Big Boys in October!

4. Loyola, Los Angeles (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 2
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Handily won State Division 2 championship
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns four varsity performers, including 3 of top 4.

Synopsis For The New Season: The Cubs are loaded! Yes, the top California finisher at last year's Nike Team Nationals does
lose a few very key leaders to graduation, but all-world sophomore Elias Gedyon and the senior triumvirate of J.P. Slater,
Andres Diaz and Pablo Ruiz stake co-coaches Lalo Diaz and "Doc" Meza with a great nucleus to start 2008! While Loyola
is the clear favorite to claim the Division II statewide title, the group will also have its sights set on besting the Division I powers
when those oportunities arise. Among the projected new contributors this fall are sophomore Noel Mollinedo (4:31.48 as a frosh),
and fellow 10th-grader Jeff Lords (10:13.30/4:40.58). The Cubs typically have among the deepest squads in the state and such
depth will be a true weapon -- and a necessity -- if the crew is to endure and prevail during what projects as among the very
best field of boys teams in state history! Stay tuned ... and we all get to watch as Gedyon continues to mature as a cross-country star.

5. Vista Murrieta, Murrieta (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 2
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished third in State Division 1
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns four from a Top 30 U.S. team, including three scorers.

Synopsis For The New Season:
As has become more and more apparent each season, Vista Murrieta has been sounding
loud footsteps in closing the gap on area superpower Murrieta Valley, not to mention the rest of the Southland elite. But it
appears that 2008 could mark the changing of the guard -- when Vista Murrieta perhaps finally catches the Nighthawks at
year's end. They traded off a few in-season decisions during the course of last fall, with the Broncos returning a quartet from
that stellar lineup that just missed advanced to Nike Team Nationals. Coach Karen Candaele's lineup should be led by
super senior Noe Ramirez and a pair of junior gems in Drew Dalton and Bryce Rausa. Senior Tyler Owen (1:56.48/4:24.27)
could be a key new varsity addition for a group that proved very deep (seven returnees at sub-4:40 for 1600m) last track season!

6. Royal, Simi Valley (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 2
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 9th in SS D1 Finals and improved well in track.
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns four varsity harriers and an excellent lower-level addition.

Synopsis For The New Season:
Remember the Highlanders' mini-dynasty of a few years ago? Well, it's baaaaaaaaack. Yep, Royal
looks very good up front with hill-and-dale veteran Travis Edwards (4:16.34) continually evolving as among the better talents in the
Southern Section. He'll be joined in that lead pack by the likes of Paul Jessen (9:30.97) and Sean Upson (4:31.08), two acclaimed
rising stars in an arsenal that has accomplished Coach Ryan Luce licking his chops with anticipation for the new season. "Am I
excited about cross-country? Heck yes I am excited," screamed Luce. And that excited reaction came way back in April! Some key
things to consider are that sveeral key projected contributors are still somewhat new to the sport and, by Luce's own account, Edwards
is still working on his own confidence at this level. Trust your coach and other who have noticed, Travis - Yes, you are that good! Keep
in mind that while the Highlanders project this well on paper, most are inexperienced at this very elite level. Everything has to fall in
place for things to work out. But if they do, Coach Luce has REPEATEDLY proven at being a master at getting teams to peak verrrrry well!

7. El Rancho, Pico Rivera (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 2
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 8th in SS D1 Finals.
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns five from group with excellent summers in recent years.

Synopsis For The New Season:
Let's be smart. Let's not take anything off the table. If you know the situation very well, you'll realize
the Dons are perhaps the most dangerous program in the state this year and (gulp) capable of winning ... the state title. That's no
fantasy. A very proud program that really puts in the work over the summertime, "The Ranch" came on very well last year with almost
no one back from 2006 -- and just barely missed the state meet in what turned out to be the deepest Southern Section Final ever.
Five guys are back, there are endless bodies in the program, and the group seemingly primes itself when it comes to the trails. Don't
put too much stock on the track times; they have different coaches and some runners did not take part. On any given day, this team
could evolve to be able to beat any other squad in the state. The top four are excellent. Closing the gap to number five would make
them uber-tough against the national-class programs

8. Petaluma (North Coast Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 2
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 2nd in State D2.
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns five from group that enjoyed best season in school history!

Synopsis For The New Season:
The Lockert Twins return for their senior year, which alone is enough ammunition to make Petaluma
a major player on the statewide scene. Add in two solid upperclass returnees in Dowdy and Felipe and factor in talented 10th grader
Clark Bernard and the group begins taking shape as one that should return to the podium yet again. Is the top spot within reach?
Yes, but it'll be tough. The scoring gap needs to close. If the early-season races can be utilized as a means for the Lockerts to "run
back" to the pack and challenge their mates to improve, it could start igniting the spark that could lead to a firestorm. The team
struggled a bit down the stretch in 2006, but proved it had matured under pressure in 2007. With plenty of experience and talent
on board in 2008, soooooo much can be possible!

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 11th in State D1.
How Much Returns in 2008: A 'six pack' returns and aims to be the best squad in NorCal yet again!

Synopsis For The New Season:
An abundance of talent, proven experience, promising youth and perhaps the premier coach in
the state over the course of the last three years is an awesome combination, with the Blue Devils entering the 2008 campaign
as among the most interesting storylines to watch unfold. Corey Coates and Matt Petersen are a superb starting point for veteran
taskmaster coach Bill Gregg, but Davis has at least five others who could be key contributors by the time the big meets roll around
this fall. It'll be interesting to see how the pieces all come together, but rest assured the Blue Devils will be very strong again in '08!

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 7th in State D1.
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns four from group that ran exceptionally well at Mt. SAC Invitational

Synopsis For The New Season:
If there's one team we're possibly under-ranking, it's this one right here. The group ran very, very
well in October at the Mt. SAC Invitational and seemed primed for a top-5 finish at state. A few individuals found it difficult in Fresno
to match that mid-year form, however, with the group still finishing a very respectable seventh. Several key individuals are back --
led by all-state candidate Collin Jarvis -- and RBV's eventual postseason fate might hinge on how much it taxes itself early on.
They are the class of the San Diego Section this fall and will have some bombing teams from around the state checking in come
November. It might be wise to pace oneself and arrive at the CIF meets very hungry and very focused on proving a point and
getting the San Diego Section's elite back on the very top rung of the performance ladder!

11. El Toro, Lake Forest (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 2
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 10th in SS D1 Finals.
How Much Returns in 2008: Returns five from perhaps the most improved team in the SS

Synopsis For The New Season:
Remember when the Chargers only had ONE varsity returnee to start last year and their lower-level
returnees were not quite as deep to start as usual? Well, it took no time for El Toro re-arm and zoom right back into the Southern
Section Top 10 rankings and on the fringe of the state Division I rankings. Most of those battled-tested warriors are back this fall and
seeking to add to the program's respected tradition. Tony Villalva, a sensational speedster who enjoyed an excellent breakthrough
in track, leads a very deep crew. Jordan Senko, an 11th grader, has also bettered 16 minutes at Mt. SAC without much problem.
Typically, this group has a quality summer and arrives into the season very motivated. This team is always among the most exciting
to follow, and 2008 should be no exception!!!

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 15h in State Division 2.
How Much Returns in 2008: Every scorer back plus an additional varsity returnee.

Synopsis For The New Season:
This appears to be the prime team in an ever-toughening Central Coast Section landscape, with
2007 all-state sophomore Garrett Rowe leading a group that includes talented sophomore-to-be Parker Schuh and a trio hovering
near 17 minutes on the state meet course. On top of that, the group is adding a high-impact freshman who could be among its
top scorers. Much like Jesuit, this team is only a whisker ahead of a very large group of Tier 3 teams in the overal statewide
pecking order. Without havign the luxury (or pressure?) of being highly challenged week ni and week out in the Southern Section
wars, it'll be up to Rowe and Mountain View to rise to the challenge and be its sharpest come November.

13. Jesuit, Carmichael (Sac-Joaquin Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 2
A Quick Look Back At 2007:
Finished 3rd in SJS D2 Finals, missing state by 4 points
How Much Returns in 2008: Five return, plus trong lower-level reinforcements

Synopsis For The New Season:
If the Marauders face the 2008 season with a big chip on their shoulders, they should prove
very tough for the competition to handle. Nobody picked Sheldon to top Jesuit by the end of the 2007 season, but that's exactly
what happened in Jesuit coming up four points short and snapping the longest state-meet appearance string in existence. Jesuit
enjoyed a very solid track season, with the red-and-gold now entering the summer with seven athletes at 10:12 or faster for
3200m !!! Leadership will be very key to where this group finishes up, with the crew likely very eager to get back to 'elite' status
in the months to come! If frontrunners emerge, their depth will be very tough to handle.

A Quick Look Back At 2007:
Finished 9th in CIF-SS Division II Finals
How Much Returns in 2008: Everyone returns from unit that was 18 points short of going to state

Synopsis For The New Season:
One of the most improved programs around during the 2007 campaign, the Seahawks
return every single performer from a squad that grew up quite a bit during last season and seeks to take the next step in
qualifying for state. A great summer and a sound approach could land Redondo with an even bigger prize: state meet
hardware! Cody Schmidt is among the top returnees in the state (plus a great track season!) with twin brother Simon also
an excellent frontrunning talent. An impressive chase pack led by Ryan Boswell could evolve into a great weapon come
championship time with steady improvement looming lethal as we move along the summer and early-winter months!

A Quick Look Back At 2007:
Finished 11th in CIF-SS Division I Finals
How Much Returns in 2008: Three scorers are among a "five-pack" of returnees.

Synopsis For The New Season:
State 1600m runner-up Raul Arcos has graduated, but the Panthers return an excellent cast
that could make its way to the state meet! Alan Cuevas, Michael Gauger and Chase Williams are a solid 1-2-3 punch with plenty
of talented depth to back them up. The younger Gauger brother also arrives for his freshman year this fall as well, with the
sophomore-to-be Michael Gauger among the premier 9th graders in the state last fall. This team is very dangerous and should be
a lock for its first CIF Finals Top 10 appearance in quite some time!

A Quick Look Back At 2007:
Finished 16th in CIF-SS Division I Finals
How Much Returns in 2008: Top four from last year among five varsity returnees

Synopsis For The New Season:
One of the teams to rise throughout the 2007 season
was the Lancers, which rose up the ranks throughout the year before finishing 16th
with a fairly young team at CIF Finals. The good news is that four scorers return, led
by senior frontrunner Sean Gildea and Kevin Joerger, a sophomore-class race winner
at the Mt. SAC Invitational a year ago. The better news is that Thousand Oaks had eight
different returning athletes break 10:15 (3200m) or 4:50 (1600m) in track. Coach Sean
Morris' crew looks highly promising approaching the new year, representing the
Ventura County region very well!

17. Campolindo, Moraga (North Coast Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back at 2007: Finished 8th in State Division III
How Much Returns In 2008: Everyone single varsity performer at state is back!

Synopsis For The New Season: Coach Chuck Woolridge's team could be verrrrrrrry dangerous come championship
time, especially with a full cast of seasoned returnees being joined by several prominent upstarts that made their mark
in track. The Cougars of 2007 were expected to play second fiddle to Petaluma this fall in the battle for the North Coast
Section's Division III championship -- not to mention overall NCS honors -- but Campolindo has done enough work to
establish fine depth in the spring; a quality summer could put the crew right alongside "P-Town" once November rolls
around! Senior Robert Pulford enjoyed an inspiring improvement in time for last year's state meet, with the group boasting
all scorers within a minute of each other at Woodward Park. Could rise from Tier 4 to be among the better Tier 3 teams
in the state by year's end and will clearly challenge for a Division III podium position in Fresno! We were quietly hoping
that senior Garret Holmes, one of the NCS's better returning four lappers in track, would run cross-country, but it appears
he will be focusing on playing football for a second consecutive year. Another 4:25 miler would have helped!

18. Upland (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back At 2007:
Finished 15th at CIF-SS Division I Finals
How Much Returns in 2008: Three scorers among five returnees, plus solid JV team

Synopsis For The New Season:
Combining both the returning cast from a year ago with
the nice cast adds from track season places the Highlanders in a position to put last year's
bumpy ride out of memory. Upland showed well for much of the year, but labored at the
Southern Section Finals to be upended by a few rival teams it had previously defeated.
John Guzman and Nick Johnson are the bookends, with additional veterans such as
Tyler Brady giving the crew a formidable nucleus for Coach Mike Wilson. Albert Cisneros,
4:42 for 1600m as a frosh in the spring, could be a key varsity addition as the group
seeks to rebound with big results in 2008!

A Quick Look Back at 2007: Finished 13th in CIF-SS Division I
How Much Returns In 2008: Four scorers are among the veteran quintet battling for state berth.

Synopsis For The New Season: Could the tradition of strong weekend racing be making a comeback for the purple and black?
The Cougars return with a well-supplied cupboard that includes five runners bettering 16:45 at Mt. SAC last season, led by
mid-15's senior talent Joey Ruelas! Rancho Cucamonga should be a very dangerous squad and will need to be sharp at
the end, when we project the Southern Section will be ever deeper and stronger than last year, when it took some eye-
popping clockings just to get out of CIF Prelims! The Cougars didn't enjoy as well a track season as we would have expected,
with the numbers being down and the depth lacking somewhat. Traditionally, however, the Purple People Eaters tend to do
a good job of devouring th e competition across hill and dale. The trend should prove true again in 2008!

A Quick Look Back at 2007: Finished 7th in State Division II
How Much Returns In 2008: Only two scorers are among the four state returnees, but has a super-deep squad.

Synopsis For The New Season: The biggest challenge for the Sailors is simple: pacing wisely through the long
season. Easier said than done. Newport Harbor battles in one of the better boys leagues on the West Coast and
such circumstances might have caught up with the crew in the last race of the year, where it still finished a very
fine seventh in state. Expect Jake Dawson and Michael Taylor to trade off the lead spot in 2008, with the Sailors
also having one of the better sophomore classes in the Southland on board. This group did very well in handling
Sunset League foes during the 2007 campaign before humming through postseason competition as well. Should
battle for the Division II Southern Section championship come November!

21. Arcadia (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back at 2007: Finished 8th in State Division I
How Much Returns In 2008: Only two scorers are among the four state returnees, but has a super-deep squad.

Synopsis For The New Season: The recipe entering the 2008 season looks favorable - a frontrunner, four veterans
and endless depth! Senior Renaud Poizat is among the top seniors in the Southland for the coming season, with
the Apaches looking to enjoy a better transition from the track oval to the hills than a year ago, when a veteran
nucleus and loaded depth almost wasn't enough to advance to state after a sensational finish the year prior.
How loaded is Arcadia to start its new quest? You can start with 15 runners in the lineup that cracked under five
minutes for the 1600 in track. Five at sub-10:17 for 3200 is also highly impressive. Tremendous upside here.

22. Murrieta Valley (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back at 2007: Finished second in State Division I and advanced to NTN.
How Much Returns In 2008: Only two varsity runners return, with others waiting in the wings.

Synopsis For The New Season: On one hand, the cupboard might seem emptier than usual for the Nighthawks to start a summer,
but all one has to do is recall the SENSATIONAL summer of progress that Coach Steve Chavez's crew enjoyed during the hottest
months of 2007, when one of the best rebuilding jobs in recent memory took place. Remember the great runs at Woodbridge and
Mt. SAC Sweeps: It would not be fair to merely assume that such a feat will be replicated this summer, but the fingerprints (and
blueprints) are there. With Chris Kincade and Daniel Knauer, "Em-Vee" enjoys a more-than-modest 1-2 punch. Three others that
bettered 17 minutes at Mt. SAC move up from the lower-level ranks, with Murrieta Valley enjoying four sub-10:20 track performers
(3200m) with a fifth at sub-4:50 for four laps on the oval. Honestly, if there's one program out there that has to be respected
24/7/365, it's this one. You can bet they'll come ready!

23. Aptos (Central Coast Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 3rd in State Division III
How Much Returns In 2008: Four scorers among six returnees, including all-state prospect

Synopsis For The New Season: An intense battle is forecast for the Central Coast Section's Division III championship, with Aptos
tabbed as the slight favorite over Willow Glen thanks to six returnees from a squad that peaked very nicely in 2007. Perennial
all-class talent Rylan Hunt has finally reached his senior year and his squad could finish stronger than last year's third-place
showing, the best in school history. The key new element in the mix for the Mariners should be Nick Leber, whose 10:15.99 for
3200 meters was among the best freshman times in the state for that distance. Lack of depth might be the team's biggest obstacle
to confront this fall, otherwise Aptos will need to remain healthy and receive timely clutch efforts if it is to top Willow Glen and others.

24. Willow Glen (Central Coast Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished Fourth in State Division III
How Much Returns in 2008: Four scorers and 6 of 7 return, including an all-stater.

Synopsis For the New Season: On paper, some could justifiably argue that the powerful Rams are the Central Coast Section team
to beat in Division III, with coach Victor Santamaria's group graduating all-state stud Mohamed Abdalla, but welcoming all others
back. Nohe Lema is the very talented frontrunner for 2008, with senior Valentino Julien also among the area's best. Willow Glen's
fate will be determined by how much the gap between a successful Lema and the trailing scorers can be shored up. If the Rams
can develop the tail end of that pack, this group will then become very dangerous on the local, sectional and statewide scenes.
Keep in mind that some team members struggled a tad at last year's state meet; addressing that stigma in 2008 would yield a
notable impact once the state meet hardware is passed out.

25. Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished ninth in State Division I
How Much Returns in 2008:
Only two from varsity return, but program was very deep last year.

Synopsis For The New Season:
Beware all opponents, the Mustangs could be arriving with a hungry vengeance in 2008!
Injuries and a young squad could not derail another state meet appearance in 2007, but Trabuco Hills started the year with
far greater aspirations than to be the last Southern Section squad at the year-end meet in Fresno. This year, expectations
from the outside are likely lower, and that's a huge mistake. Three projected scorers averaged a modest 4:33 for 1600m on
the oval. Add in a 9:44 talent for 3200 and two other frosh that combined to average 10:01 for 3200 and Coach Liam Clemons'
team has the tools to wreak havoc on the Orange County scene early and often. How well a trio of excellent freshmen-turned-
sophomores continue to evolve will determine whether the Mustangs will challenge local mega-powers Dana Hills and El Toro
for County supremacy. There's a good chance -- even with only one of the top six returning -- the Mustangs will return to Fresno!

26. St. John Bosco, Bellflower (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 8th in CIF-SS Division Finals
How Much Returns in 2008:
Four scorers return, all being juniors.

Synopsis For The New Season:
It could be that not a single senior will be on varsity and enrollment is dwindling
considerably on the Bellflower-based campus, with the Braves likely finding themselves moced down to Division
III once the updated CBED enrollment figures are released in late October. But St. John Bosco is a good bet to
remain a statewide parochial power with among the better 1-2 punches in the state as Carlos Martinez and
Mario Flores should REALLY have the attention of college recruiters for the next two years! Interestingly, the
Braves have always relied on depth to dominate league action. Last year marked the first time in memory that
SJB was not overly loaded at the bottom of the varsity roster -- and they ended up tied in the League Finals
scoring by Mater Dei. St. John Bosco might have even less depth in 2007, but they'll be tough to beat for the crown!

27. Foothill, Santa Ana (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 3
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished sixth in State Division II
How Much Returns in 2008: Four athletes return from last year's state meet lineup.

Synopsis For The New Season:
Inconsistency with a young roster in 2006 gave way to stability and a quality finish in 2007.
Several key runners return and frosh phenom Nathaniel Cushing-Murray will undoubtedly be out to quash any sophomore-year
jinx. There are SEVERAL good "Tier 3" teams in the state this year, however -- mostly in the Southern Section -- and the Knights'
biggest challenge might be pacing themselves accordingly this time out rather than getting caught up in press clippings. A smart
approach and the development of a fifth man is what's needed to put this team on the podium in Fresno come November. Keep in
mind that only one senior projects to score for the team at this point.... so the best surely is yet to come in 2009!

Leading Returnees And 2007 State Meet Times:

28. Mater Dei, Santa Ana (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 4
A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished 13th in State Division II
How Much Returns In 2008: All-stater has graduated, but everyone else returns.

Synopsis For The New Season: There was only one Southern Section boys team that surprised us somewhat during League Finals
week and that was the Mater Dei. Competing in a Trinity League meet that showcased six teams all ranked in CIF at one point or
another, it was the Monarchs who shockingly prevailed on a sixth-runner tiebreaker to edge St. John Bosco for the top spot in that
race. League individual champ Luis Gallardo has graduated, but everyone else returns! Brothers Eric and Scott Hansen lead
Coach Rick Martinez's group, which still features only two seniors among its returning top six. Among those to also watch will be
Hailu Hitchman, who placed 10th in the Trinity League Finals despite being only a freshman! The Monarchs will be loaded and
excited, but St. John Bosco projects win its 15th consecutive league crown. If Mater Dei continues its late rise of 2007, the outcome
could be very dramatic. The Monarchs will be considered among the Southland's top combined (boys and girls) programs this fall.

29. Valencia, Placentia (Southern Section) -- Power Rating: Tier 4

A Quick Look Back At 2007: Finished sixth in State Division I
How Much Returns in 2008: Four runners are back from a year ago.

Synopsis For The New Season: Ranked 28th out of 31 teams?
You can bet that Coach Pat Hadley is
pounding her fist on a table
right about now. Mad about being under-rated? Hardly. The master
motivator no doubt would rather see her team unranked and filling
the underdog's role. Only two scorers return from a team that closed
superbly in 2007 -- and one of those two was primarily sprinting
during much of the track sesson -- but with four harriers at sub-17:00
at Woodward Park, the Tigers have a fairly good starting point entering
the year. Finding top-end leadership will be key but Valencia does
have the seniors with state meet experience on board. This team
could fall to "Tier 4" status early in the season, but it matters where
you finish and the Tigers are usually pretty good at closing with a rush!
